AHEPA SCHOLARSHIPS

HISTORY

In 1986, AHEPA Mother Lodge Chapter No. 1 of Atlanta, GA established the AHEPA Mother Lodge Chapter No. 1 Educational Foundation, Inc., a separate independent non-profit 501 Public Charity to promote various educational programs on behalf of AHEPA in the Atlanta community. The Foundation, which is administered by an elected Board of Directors, has established the criteria for reviewing applications and presenting scholarships annually to qualifying students. In 1986, the Atlanta chapter donated $5,000 to the foundation. Since 1986, the Foundation has received a number of endowments and memorials. In 1993, the Board of Directors was expanded to include the Daughters of Penelope. In 2002, the Board of Directors was expanded to include a member of Ahepa Prometheus Chapter No. 519, Marietta, GA.

The Fellowship Dinner, which is a major fundraiser for the Foundation, has helped to raise more than $158,000 (through 2013) for the general fund. Half of the net proceeds from the 2014 fundraiser went toward the scholarships for that year.

In 2002, the Board of Directors established a Cultural Educational Endowment to help promote cultural and educational programs such as the George Skaroulis Music and Photographic Exhibit and Cultural Event at Jasmine Hill Gardens and Outdoor Museum in Montgomery, AL. The Foundation has made a $5,000 contribution to the American Foundation for Hellenic Studies for Georgia State University's Hellenic Studies program.

Since 1986, the AHEPA Scholarship Foundation has, in total, awarded more than 700 scholarships to students totaling over $867.900 from an endowment now valued at more than a million dollars.
